Discover Dhankuta: An emerging hub for responsible tourism in Eastern Nepal
Description
The HI-GRID Responsible Tourism initiative, implemented by ICIMOD with support from the Australian Government, promotes climate-resilient and inclusive development in Dhankuta, Eastern Nepal, by integrating responsible tourism with watershed management to address water scarcity and support alternative livelihoods. In collaboration with local governments, civil society, and the private sector, the project revives drying springs and improves water security through nature-based solutions such as recharge ponds, rainwater harvesting, and bio-sand filtration systems. Community-based homestays led by Indigenous Aathpahariya communities offer authentic cultural experiences while empowering women and youth through sustainable entrepreneurship. Signature tourism products include heritage walks, nature trails, the Mangsire Festival, and guided visits to water conservation sites—blending environmental stewardship with cultural preservation and economic development.
