State of the Cryosphere 2025: Ice Loss = Global Damage

Creators

Description

Weak climate pledges are steering the planet toward over 2°C of warming, risking catastrophic ice loss and sea-level rise. The 2025 State of the Cryosphere Report warns that polar ice stability is threatened at just 1°C, and even current warming of 1.2°C could lock in meters of sea-level rise. Glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost are disappearing, oceans are acidifying, and permafrost is now a net carbon source. Scientists say the most ambitious pathways could keep warming below 1.5°C by 2100—but only if deep emissions cuts start immediately.
