Women's empowerment through renewable energy-powered lift irrigation systems (WERELIS) Securing Bhutan's food future through a low carbon pathway
Creators
Description
WERELIS aims to ensure reliable, sustainable access to irrigation water using gender-responsive, renewable energy (RE)-powered lift irrigation systems to strengthen food security and advance inclusive, low-carbon development. The project has three objectives:
- Equipping policymakers with knowledge and capacity to scale sustainable, gender-responsive irrigation solutions
- Building women’s skills to boost income, access employment, and lead as service providers and entrepreneurs in the sector
- Documenting the model’s methodology for dissemination across the Hindu Kush Himalaya
Keeping women’s empowerment at the centre, WERELIS advances women’s access and control, builds technical and institutional capacity, and strengthens collective agency, positioning women as active participants and agents of change in the renewable energy transition.
