Landscapes of pastoralist transhumance : A thematic approach

Description

This thematic approach to landscapes of pastoralist transhumance aims to raise awareness of the exceptional scope and influence that pastoralist transhumance has had over millennia on landscapes in all regions of the world. The many benefits that these landscapes have delivered, and continue to deliver, the challenges that they now face in relation to continuing practices, and the safeguarding of both material and intangible heritage are also discussed. More specifically, the report is designed to support professionals and authorities in related sectors, as well as local communities, through providing a heritage perspective on pastoralist transhumance, as an essential prerequisite to exploring the challenges and opportunities associated with identifying and safeguarding representative landscapes, and defining how communities can contribute to, and benefit from, their sustainable management and development. Finally, the report highlights the need for further studies to document transhumant activity and its heritage as an essential basis for the development of long-term strategic planning to aid recognition and support for landscapes shaped by pastoralist transhumance.
