Embodied carbon in rammed-earth eco-homes at Living Mountain Lab, Godavari, Nepal

  • 1. International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)

Description

Embodied carbon in rammed-earth eco-homes at Living Mountain Lab, Godavari, Nepal assesses the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction of two rammed-earth eco-homes at ICIMOD’s Living Mountain Lab in Nepal. The study quantifies embodied carbon from material production and transportation, demonstrating that the eco-homes have a total embodied carbon of 72,718 kg CO₂e and an embodied carbon intensity of 162.6 kg CO₂e/m², substantially lower than comparable reinforced cement concrete (RCC) buildings. The report highlights the potential of locally sourced earth, stone, and timber as low-carbon construction materials and provides evidence to support sustainable building practices and low-carbon development pathways across the Hindu Kush Himalaya region
