ICIMOD Annual Report 2023

2023 was a year marked by challenges, action, and transformation. The theme of our Strategy 2030 — Moving Mountains — aptly reflects the spirit of our work throughout the year. From addressing the escalating impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, to launching new initiatives and streamlining our operations through three Strategic Groups, ICIMOD pushed boundaries to tackle seemingly insurmountable issues across the Hindu Kush Himalaya. A major milestone was the release of our flagship assessment, Water, Ice, Society, and Ecosystems in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HI-WISE), highlighting cryosphere change and its far-reaching impacts. Through new community engagement approaches like the ‘walkshops’ in Bhutan and Nepal, we deepened our understanding of on-the-ground realities. As we honoured 40 years of service to the region, we were reminded of our deep emotional connection to these landscapes and communities, even as we mourned the tragic loss of a dear colleague. This report offers a glimpse into a pivotal year — one that reaffirms our commitment to a greener, more resilient, and inclusive HKH region.
