Description

Chapter 2 of the IPBES report emphasizes the role of diverse, inclusive, and imaginative visions in driving transformative change for a sustainable future where nature and people thrive. It analyzes 881 visions from various sources, identifying five core themes—regenerative economies, community empowerment, biodiversity health, spiritual reconnection, and technological innovation. Participatory visioning processes that include multiple perspectives and values are shown to be more effective, especially when they incorporate Indigenous knowledge and holistic worldviews. The chapter highlights that visions with broad scope and low resistance from the status quo have greater transformative potential, and that integrating intrinsic, relational, and instrumental values of nature is key to achieving the 2050 Vision for Biodiversity.
