The issue brief focuses on the challenges surrounding yak herding as an effective rangeland management tool in the highlands and offers recommendations to address these challenges. While yak herding contributes significantly to maintaining essential ecosystem services provided by rangelands, the livelihoods of yak herders are threatened by rangeland degradation. To mitigate this, incentivising yak herding and involving herders in decision-making for rangeland improvement are crucial. Moreover, the departure of youth from the yak herding profession necessitates linking it with tourism and fostering technological innovation, such as establishing a yak milk processing plant, to attract and engage the younger generation.
