  • Summary

This chapter presents the evolution of disaster management in Bangladesh during the last three decades through a shift from relief and response to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and looks at it with a communication lens. People from different livelihoods like to receive timely and reliable flood and weather forecasts with locally referenced information. There is still demand for a “multiple information sharing” or early warning (EW) dissemination to the community level. This multiple system of EW results in an integrated system for rapid notification to the last mile households. These could help save lives, livelihoods, and assets for the community as well as households. A national multihazard early warning system through IVR (interactive voice response) has been in operation since 2011. Two effective early warning systems to the last mile community are found to be working very well. Cyclone Preparedness Programme for cyclones is found to be very effective in saving lives and livelihood assets.
