Planning, tourism, and cultural landscapes

  • Darvill, T.
  • Summary

A group of experts convened by the Cultural Heritage Committee of the Council of Europe has recently been considering the question of cultural landscapes with a view to publishing a European Recommendation on the conservation and management of Cultural Landscape Areas. The background to this initiative is summarised and the sections dealing with matters relating to tourism are outlined. Three interconnecting levels of approach, strategic planning, development control, and site-specific management programmes; are singled out as important themes which are already being taken up in a number of European countries. The three themes are illustrated with reference to recent work at'Stonehenge in England. Resource assessment and the involvement of local communities in cultural resources management are identified as important avenues for future development.
