This document is a synthesis of the discussions and conclusions of the first International Expert Consultation Meeting: Mountain Initiative on Climate Change held 23-24 September 2010 in Kathmandu
. The Consultation, organised by the Ministry of Environment of the Government of Nepal (MOE/GON) and ICIMOD, was attended by policy and decision makers, national experts involved in the UNFCCC process, and representatives from academia, international organisations, and development partners from a wide range of mountain countries. The document identifies strategic issues and topics of significant importance to the global mountain community in the context of climate and global change, to provide a basis for raising mountain issues in the UNFCCC negotiations and Rio+20 preparatory meetings and Summit and provide the Mountain Agenda with increased recognition in these multi-lateral environmental negotiations and agreements. The document was prepared for the Mountain Initiative for Climate Change Adaptation in Mountain Regions initiated by the Government of Nepal to provide a framework to bring mountainous countries together and build a common platform to support the Mountain Agenda.

The greater Himalayan region contains the largest areas covered by glaciers and permafrost outside the polar regions
. The region and its water resources play an important role in global atmospheric circulation, biodiversity, agriculture, and hydropower, while serving more than 1.3 billion people in the basin areas of ten large Asian rivers. Climate change is affecting the amount of snow and ice and rainfall patterns, but there is a severe lack of the data needed to understand these processes. This paper discusses these issues, the need to close the knowledge gap, the need for adaptation strategies, and the importance of strengthening local knowledge and the institutions relevant for adaptation.

. Selected scholars, development practitioners, and scientists from the region and beyond were invited to provide a commentary on different aspects of the Centre from their personal perspective. This publication is the result. It provides diverse views and insights into the development of the Centre, a review of its work from a regional and global perspective, and ideas about the role it could or should play in the future and prospects for the Centre.
