Though one can visualise the environmental problems in the mountain regions in almost all countries of the world, the magnitude of the problem is very high in a mountainous and developing country like Nepal. Due to the rapid growth of population and consequent effect on over exploitation of the depleting resources, ecological degradation is taking place everywhere in the Nepal Himalaya. The main objective of preparing this paper is to analyse environmental problems faced by Nepal, particularly in the hills and mountain regions. This paper, after portraying a geographical background of Nepal, throws light on the global concern regarding the environment problems of mountains, analyses the various causes and consequences of environmental degradation in Nepal, highlights some of the efforts made by the government to solve the problems, and concludes with come recommendations.
The author looks at population pressure on land, migration and deforestation as areas of environmental concern. Soil erosion, poor construction of roads, pressure from tourism, climate change have all contributed to the problem.
