Shishikhow and Mulkhow valleys both lie in Chitral, Pakistan, but they are confronted with very different challenges. While Shishikhow faces devastating floods, Mulkhow faces extreme droughts. For generations, people have adapted to these hazards using a multitude of indigenous and adopted practices. However, the incidence of flash floods and droughts is increasing, and the traditional ways of adapting are no longer sufficient. The 2010 floods in Pakistan affected more individuals than the combined total of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, the Kashmir Earthquake and the Haiti Earthquake put together. What options do people have if such extreme events become the norm rather than the exception?
