In simple language, the word “Bio-diversity” encompasses the variety of all life forms on earth. Scientists have estimated that there are about 1.0 to 1.50 crore species living on our planet, out of which about 18 lakh species have so far been identifi ed by the scientists. At present, about 727 crore human population resides on earth. It has been estimated that there is an annual global increase of about 8 crore population. Th erefore, there is an increase of about 100 crore population in every 12 years period. It has also been estimated that by the year 2050, the world population may cross 1000 crore. Several recent scientifi c studies indicate that earth resources are enough to sustain about 300 crore human population. As a result of cumulative anthropogenic pressure on earth, we are losing our precious natural and bio-resources.
