The Practice of Eco-Migration in Southern Ningxia Mountainous Areas

  • Zhang, M. J.
  • Summary
Annotation:::: The paper focuses on the sociological study of mountain migration in the southern part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, and discusses some of the outcomes and problems of the mountain migration. Using the methods of empirical study and on-site investigation, the paper finds that the four-year-long eco-migration project in Ningxia has achieved positive results in terms of improving production and living conditions of migrants, restoring the eco-environment, expanding channels for and reducing costs of poverty alleviation, relieving the population pressure, promoting national solidarity, and effectively using land resources. However, some problems persist in the eco-migration project, including the conflict between the scale of relocation and resettlement capacity, shortage of funds, poor production capacity of relocated migrants, unsatisfactory infrastructural facilities, and insufficient land for development. The author suggests that research and discussion on eco-migration work in southern Ningxia’s mountainous areas should be approached from a policy guarantee angle.
