The Adaptation of the Relocated Migrants from the Three Gorges Areas: Case of Yuanshi Township, Songzi City, Hubei Province

  • Zhang, M.
  • Summary
Annotation:::: The paper provides analysis of migrants relocating from the Three Gorges area, and examines how migrants adapt themselves to a sending place. Drawing on methods of ethnographic study and field research, the paper describes the cultural life of Three Gorges migrants who move to Yuanshi township, Songzi city, Hubei province. Based on the in-depth interviews with migrants, local villagers, and government migration staff, the author identifies some difficulties in the process of migrant adaptation to local life and culture, particularly in terms of uncertainty about the future and the desire to return to and seek employment in their home areas. These problems reflect a situation in which relocated migrans have not successfully adapted to the different culture in a new place. Migrants have not adapted to the different culture for two primary reasons: shortcoming on the part of some individual migrants in taking initiative, and the lack of conditions and an environment suitable for newly migrated communities to attain subsistence and development. The adaptation of migrants to different cultures greatly depends on practices related to these two factors. According to the author, the study of migrant adaptation to new communities enriches the study ethno-migrant culture and theory, and also provides constructive suggestions on the improvement of conditions and future development of migrants.
