Scrutinizing the Changes of Eco-Immigrants’ Culture with an Anthropological Perspective: Case of an Immigration Community in Mining Township, Yongning County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region

  • Ma, X. P.
  • Summary
Annotation:::: The paper is a visual anthropological study of mountain migration related to ecological protection and poverty alleviation, and discusses and analyses changes in the culture of eco-migrants in Mining Township, Yongning county, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Beginning in the early 1990s, the People’s Government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, with the support of national anti-poverty funds, implemented a large-scale ecological migration project in southern part of Ningxia. This part of the region, called Xihaigu, was an economically distressed and ecologically-vulnerable area where local civilians could hardly support their families. During the implementation of the project, they were relocated to Yellow River irrigation areas in order to achieve poverty alleviation and economic development.Using the method of documental study, the paper finds that mountain migration is an important cause of cultural change, and that eco-migration in Ningxia has brought about great changes in the traditional culture of eco-migrants while promoting the socioeconomic development of the sending area. This type of migration also has significant effects on their lifestyle and production mode, and can improve their ability to adapt themselves to the outside world. Additionally, there appear to be bidirectional interactions between the eco-immigrants’ cultural adaptation and the construction of a new residential community.
