An Anthropological Study of Mud Flow Disaster: Case of Ailao Mountain of Yunnan

Annotation:::: The paper is an anthropological study of mountain migration related to mud flow disasters in Ailao mountain area of Yunnan province, and analyses the links between natural disasters and migration, human behaviour and culture, and social organization. Using the methods of case study and empirical study to conduct research on resettlement related to natural disasters, and the authors aim to draw the attention of more scholars to such disasters and related migration. Based on the findings, the occurrence, prevention, and control of mud flow are closely related to the actions and culture of human society. Natural disasters are a cause of mountain migration and also changes in human culture, which responds by producing the mechanism of emergency and a means of prevention. As a result of disasters, the process of relief and means of prevention may change the lifestyle and housing condition of local villagers, and the original relationships between groups. The paper concludes by stating that people have to rethink the relations between humans and nature and the mode of village development.
