Description: The local Wen Hai villagers showed much initiative despite their abject poverty. (They had been obliged to pay taxes in the form of rice until Deng Xiao-ping put a stop to the practice in 1979. The point here is that the village altitude is above the normal level for rice to ripen). They greeted our proposals with enthusiasm and we achieved vigorous input from the village women. This photo shows two of the villagers demonstrating their newly acquired pump to be used to irrigate crops 8211; now barley.
