Description: Lake Sarez overhangs the Bartang Gorge within which about 30 small Ismaili villages obtain a precarious livelihood. The gorge is more than 100 km long and flows into the Amu Darya River. Speculations for catastrophe of gigantic proportions have been made 8211; a threat to the lives of 5 million people. The 1999 investigative team unanimously concluded that the level of danger was minimal. June 1999.
