  • Summary

Deforestation and forest degradation, through agricultural expansion, conversion to pastureland, infrastructure development, unsustainable logging practices, fires, etc., accounts for nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, more than the entire global transportation sector and second only to the energy sector. There is now widespread consensus that the global average temperature increase must be stabilized at or below two degrees Celsius to keep the impacts of climate change within limits that human and natural systems willreasonably be able to tolerate. Achieving this objective is practically impossible without reducing emissions from the forest sector as part of a suite of mitigation action
