Conflicts in the Rodnei Mountains National Park in Romania

  • Baltaretu, A.
  • Summary
The Rodnei Mountains National Park in Romania is one of the 13 national parks and one of the three reservations of the biosphere in this country, that shelters a variety of natural touristic attractions setting it apart as a natural protected area. In general, the landscape is in a good state of preservation, being altered in some areas through atrophic actions such as land clearing, motorized access in the scientific reservations, poaching, intensive grazing or the construction of vacation residences. Consideration is given on the mentality of Romanian people concerning the concept of natural protected areas, types of behaviour that should be adopted when travelling inside a national park and property rights of some lands situated inside a national park.  Local people owning land inside the scientific reservation do not always know how to protect the biodiversity that exists here. Some of this behaviour is due to the lack of campaigns that allow people to realize the impact of their actions on the environment. Analyzing the conflicts in the Rodnei Mountains National Park, it can be seen that poaching is prominent, with great effects on the number of chamois’s species. There is also impact from motorized access and camping in the forbidden areas, with throwing of waste in the scientific reservation. In order to solve these issues, financial resources are needed to control and prevent these actions, to enable the ecological reconstruction of the affected areas where waste is deposited, to ensure the presence of rangers on the important touristic routes, with information boards in the areas of most intense circulation (as most have been destroyed). Least but not last, the application of the existing legislation in the field of protecting the environment is needed as this can reduce the incidence of offences commited in the mountain areas of Romania.
