Mountainous regions: Laboratories for adaptation

  • Summary
The International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) in the October edition focuses on an IHDP review on mountain regions around the world, in particular, looking at adaption to climate change in difficult environments. Summaries of scientific work describe findings in mountainous areas in Africa, Eurasia and the Americas. The projects reveal the prime importance of the role of the local population in these regions.  For example, German researchers show social and economic impacts in the Carpathians; Mount Kenya forms a water tower in Africa, for an immense area.  What will happen when the reserves of snow melts under the effect of climate warming?  Swiss scientists attempt to respond to that question with local research.  The thirteen other articles focus on similar issues. This issue includes the following articles:
  • Why Mountains Matter, Gregory Greenwood
  • The Mountain Research Initiative: From Theory to Practice, Claudia Drexler
