Manila Declaration for Global Action on Gender, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction

WEDO joined leaders and decision-makers at the Third Global Congress of Women in Politics and Governance (CAPWIP) in the Philippines to ensure that women everywhere are engaged in and understand the implications of climate change. Third Global Congress of Women Politics and Governance on Gender in Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction was organized by the Center for Asia Pacific Women in Politics (CAPWIP) in Manila (Philippines) from 19 to 22 October 2008. The objectives of the conference were to:
  • review and examine the gender aspects in climate change and disaster risk reduction and formulate appropriate actions to address these aspects;
  • define the roles women can play in addressing the impacts of climate change and disaster risk reduction programs and policies at the global, national, and sub national levels;
  • identify and define the action agenda for parliamentarians, policy advocates, and women leaders to support global and national actions to adapt gender responsive legislation and programs.
Three hundred participants (mainly women): parliamentarians, decision makers in government institutions, some NGOs and international agencies. The key players and experts on the topics related to gender in climate change were all there. UNEP, UNISDR, WHO and IUCN actively participated in the workshop by presenting papers and involving in the steering committee. There were representatives of Bhutan (notably Ministry of Agriculture), Pakistan, India and China.
