In this case, alternative media is defined as the combination of processes, methods, information materials and products based on traditional ways of communicating in communities, including poetry, songs, story telling, and town criers. Upland communities in the Himalayan region tend to have limited access to information sources and therefore use a mixture of alternative and more modern media as a means of communication and entertainment. The familiar and entertaining nature of alternative media allows information to reach all members of a community, including the non-literate and marginalised social groups, making it a valuable tool for the dissemination of development related information. This manual is the outcome of a three year project exploring the traditional media and forms of communication in local communities in the Himalayan region and how this can be used to deliver messages that contribute to the improvement of livelihoods. Aimed at development workers and community members alike, it provides clear guidelines on developing community based communication processes for areas with limited access to electronic media and other sources of information, with the intention of enabling communities to set up and run appropriate information services. Materials are provided on the approach and process of alternative media and introductions to the various types of alternatives media. Additional materials include three CD-ROMS, which can be obtained on request, covering: • Examples of alternative media in practice • A short introduction to alternative media • An interactive and animated version of the guide Accessible at http://booksonline.org
