The quality and direction of migration as well as its economic, social, and cultural impacts on the life of communities have changed, along with the increase in the numbers of migrants. There are conflicting opinions about whether temporary labour migration promotes or hinders the development of mountainous regions. While travelling along mountain roads in Central Asian countries, the authors investigated whether labour migration stimulates the development of mountain regions, interviewing local inhabitants, migrants, businessmen, authorities, and local representatives of international organisations. The data collected on their travels was used in an International Organization for Migration (IOM) research project on labour migration in Central Asian countries, Russia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in 2004. The present article summarises the results of their research and highlights a number of issues related to the economic and social impacts of labour migration. 000013003 653__ $$aCentral Asia 000013003 653__ $$adevelopment 000013003 653__ $$aeconomics 000013003 653__ $$aHimalayas 000013003 653__ $$aKyrgyzstan 000013003 653__ $$alabour 000013003 653__ $$amigration 000013003 653__ $$aPakistan 000013003 653__ $$aRussia 000013003 653__ $$aTajikistan 000013003 650__ $$aMountain livelihoods 000013003 650__ $$aMigration and remittances 000013003 691__ $$aMountain livelihoods 000013003 691__ $$aMigration and remittances 000013003 773__ $$pMountain Research and Development 27(2):104-108. 2007: http://www.bioone.org/doi/pdf/10.1659/mrd.0904 000013003 8564_ $$uhttp://lib.icimod.org/record/13003/files/5679.pdf 000013003 980__ $$aARTICLE
