This article is about a man, Mahender Rautela, who resigned from his private sector job in Delhi to come back to his home hamlet of Chhabisa, in the poor mountain state of Uttaranchal in northern India. He took up farming for an income and dedicated himself to helping others in his spare time. Rautela joined a small group of existing part-time water volunteers to help his community cope with the increasing problem of water shortage.
