Review: Juregen Schick: Gods are leaving the country: Art theft from Nepal

  • Sharma, P. R.
  • Summary
Review: Juregen Schick; 1997: Gods are leaving the country: Art theft from Nepal. White Orchid Press, Thailand. The problem of art theft in Nepal is becoming alarming in scale and magnitude. Going by reports, incidences of such thefts seem only to increase rather than abate. Art-theft in Nepal began to become glaringly noticed from the 1960s. The more serious side of it lies in the attitude of indifference adopted by the government officials and government agencies whose job it is to protect and preserve the artistic heritage of the country. There seems an air of apathy and unconcern to protect the country's artistic heritage. Nor have the mushrooming NGOs in recent years been able to come up with any effective schemes to protect Nepal's most precious artistic heritage and prevent their depredations.
